Jesus’ Prayer to the Father
By: Arlou June D. Gomez
JESUS’ PRAYER to the Father stems from his GENUINE, AUTHENTIC [though redundant], 100% humanity, and not because there is another God, for there is only ONE GOD [Deut. 6:4; Gal. 3:20].
If Jesus’ prayer is used to prove the existence of a separate deity, then the following problems would arise:
1. We have a situation of a God [God the Son], praying to another God [God the Father], which is absurd, for by its very essence, God needs not to pray. Only humans pray!
2. The undeniable separation of persons in the Godhead, which to me is tantamount to binitarianism [belief in two separate Gods] — but wait, how about the Holy Spirit?
BUT IF we understand that Jesus pray to the father as a man, while also acknowledging that the fullness of the father is fully incarnated in his person [Colossians 2:9], then we remain true and faithful to the Jewish monotheistic belief of the ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF GOD.
To this, Paul called it a “GREAT MYSTERY,” [1 Tim. 3:16], i.e., how could Jesus be both Human and Divine, Spirit and the Flesh, the Father and the Son at THE SAME TIME.
