MORNING MANNA | Honor the Lord with Your Substance and With the Firstfruits of All Thine Increase
By: Arlou June D. Gomez
Proverbs 3:9 says: “Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:”
The Hebrew word of “fistfruit” is “reshiyth,” i.e., first in place, time, order or rank. It also signifies a “principal thing.”
Thus, “BAWAL ANG PIPITYUGIN (small time) NA PAGBIBIGAY SA DIOS.”
If you link it with Hebrews 7:1-4, Abraham’s the giving of tenth (tithes) of the “spoils” to Melchisedec literally means “the top of a heap.”
“Spoils” comes from the Greek word “akrothinion,” meaning “the top of a heap,” hence “firstfruit offerings,” and in war “the choicest spoils,” (See Vines Expository Dictionary)
Proverbs 3:9 and Hebrews 7:1-4 only refers to the giving of MATERIAL THINGS, not really service, for the Hebrew word for “substance” is “hon,”which literally means riches or wealth. “Spoils” also as explained, are materials things gained from war.
Thus, we cannot directly apply the above-quoted passages if we mean giving the best of our worship or service to God, lest we be guilty of misapplying or misquoting the scripture.
If you mean giving the “top of the heap” (akrothinion) or the “principal thing,” (reshiyth) of our SERVICE (to do) to God, then Jesus said:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” (Mark 12:30 KJV).
Here, “loving” God is encompassing. It includes everything.
Again, in giving our material things, in our singing for him, in our worship, service, and in everything we do for God, always take note that:
“BAWAL ANG PIPITYUGIN (small time) SA DIOS.”
HAVE A BLESSED DAY!
